In modules for which I contribute in part to the teaching or coordination, shared responsibilities and administrative duties include:

  • Point of contact for student queries and provision of guidance in matters relating to choice of modules, assessment and progress
  • Design and planning modules and changes to module content ensuring compatibility with course aims, objectives and learning outcomes
  • Coordinating and managing teaching on modules
  • Coordinating the examining of students on the module and liaison with other members of teaching staff, internal and external examiners
  • Module review and assessment processes to facilitate module adaptation and changes based on student feedback, teaching feedback and external examiner suggestions.
  • Reflective practice and review of teaching content and methods based on analysis of student views through teaching assessment, module evaluation and peer observation sessions.

Contribution to Collaborative teaching with partner Institutions

In collaboration with the British Cataract and Refractive Society I have led a Refractive Surgery distance learning initiative. Through this I have established links with numerous national and international lecturers, all of which contribute lecture material and a number carry out e tutoring activities for me. Such collaborators include world-renowned surgeons and optometrists including:

  • Arthur Cummings, Wellington Eye Clinic Dublin,
  • Steve Schallhorn, Department of Ophthalmology, Naval Medical Centre, San Diego, CA
  • Sudi Patel, Common Services Agency, NHScotland, Edinburgh,
  • Michael Mrochen, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
  • Stefan Pieger, Nidek Co. Ltd. Gamagori/Japan.
  • Christine Astin, Jorge Alio and Omar Hakim to mention just a few.

In relation to Cataract and Refractive Surgery I interface with the Association of Optometrists Ireland, Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Northern Ireland Optometric Society and the General Optics Council.

Also in relation to Forensics I interface with The Northern Ireland Forensic Medical Officers Association, Forensic Service Northern Ireland, Child Exploitation and Online Protection Agency, Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine, State Pathologist, NI and UK Coroner’s Office and The PSNI.
